While we do a lot of the same work, there are some fundamental differences between coaching and counseling. A counselor is a mental health professional who provides therapeutic services and even psychotherapy analysis.  If they are a clinical counselor, they also have authority to make diagnoses. A coach does not do these things. While we are certainly interested in one's past, we don't analyze it. We meet you where you are and walk alongside you as you process your grief, and help you forge a path forward through achievable and actionable plans that we work on together. Think of it more as an experienced and supportive friend who offers guidance and empowerment in moving forward, rather than a clinician who will help you analyze and may stay more in your past. 

To begin with, we will have a conversation to discuss what you are looking for, what's going on, and what your current needs are. Coaching, as I mentioned, involves moving forward and we need to be in the right mindset to do that. If in the course of our conversation it becomes clear to me that you might not be ready for this phase, then I might advise you to seek counseling first (either psychotherapy or substance abuse, for example). Everyone's experience and journey is unique to them, so this has to be our first step.
